45 Mins Later we arrived at Penneshaw and made our way to the first destination… Sunset Wines, that’s right less than 15mins after arriving in K.I we’ve slurping the Vino. Very nice if I must say so, we bought a bottle of Crimson to enjoy with our left over Cheese from the mainland…. Yummy!!!. With the bottle in the fridge, we head for Brownlow a small place before Kingscote to set up camp before heading out to Emu Bay. which is a wonderful flat beach with it’s shallow, clear, clean and warm water. Very good for swimming or paddling in!
Pictures below are from the journey to and at Ducks Lagoon. Although we saw a Kola, old cars left to rust and a collapsed building from the people who used to own the land we didn’t see any Ducks…Quack Quack!!!
Stokes Bay, a really nice place to visit. Had the women in Goolwa not mentioned there was a hidden beach entrance amongst the rocks we would of missed it, as its the only way to access the beach.
Second day on K.I we headed to the west and first port of call was the Cape Borda lighthouse. One of the smallest, highest(from sea level) and unusual lighthouse we ever visited, which according to the ‘Batty’ National Park guide “Mick” (see picture below – he likes to blow stuff up!!) It’s the only real lighthouse in S.A.!!! Mick was a real character and made the tour very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
Kangaroo island has many unsealed roads which makes for some bumpy driving and a lot of cleaning (poor old Katrina) we only have a bucket and a sponge….better get cracking.
Edit* I’ve just been told by Katrina “if I think she's going to clean the car I’ve got another thing coming!!!” (ooh… maybe a surprise
From the lighthouse we headed South towards Flinders Chase where we did a nature walk and saw Kangaroos and wallabies…what a surprise on an Island called K.I.!!
Below are pictures from Admirals Arch, where we saw New Zealand fur seals (OH NO BRO!)
Remarkable Rock!!!… More like remarkable JIMMAY! see my amazing strength? oh and a quick game of hide and seek. Where I forgot the rules, hide then go seek
after spending a night surrounded by wallabies at Western K.I caravan park, we headed to Kelly Hill Caves on day three. Named after a local stockman in 1880 called Kelsy’s horse Kelly which fell into the sink hole thus discovering the cave. (sorry no photos, forgot to take any)
Next we visited the Little Sahara, just as the name suggest it a little version of the real Sahara. But the sand dunes are still pretty big. After we’d climbed to the top of one of the sand dunes we figured our body boards could be used to surf the sand (Thanks to the Pestell’s for the idea as seen on Mich’s facebook). Of course only one of us had to walk back to the car to get the board though(which was quite a trek) , so off went James while I sat down and enjoyed the scenery.
As you can see from the picture below even though it’s called little, it’s still quite big…………
Onto Seal Bay where the Sea Lions come to rest and sleep after 3 days at sea. Although very cute, they are not as entertaining as the seals we saw at Admirals Arch.
That night we stoped at a place called Wreckers Beach, where we were the only two people there. (another night without power or running water, we are getting good at this).
We have now returned to Penneshaw, (where we get the ferry from) to spend a few days relaxing. We did however go to Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery today and picked up a few things…….
Until next time folks, keep on trucking!!!
