After seating outside and watching the sunset while a group of Kangaroos hopped past us night, we awoke the next morning to the sound of pouring rain, thank god we packed our waterproof coats (especially the Arsenal one given to me by Steven, Lisa, Charlie & Grace). We managed to pack the tent away pretty fast although it was still soaking wet. We then pulled over to eat breakfast (bowl of cereal )on the side of the road at Salt Creek.
After getting funny looks from passers-by we continued towards Wellington to catch a ferry across Lake Alexandrina before heading onto Strathalbyn.
Our final destination was Goolwa, where we planned to spend a few nights and book our trip across to Kangaroo Island, which we soon discovered was very expensive ($560 return) for a 45 min trip, talk about daylight robbery!! Anyway we managed to get it a little cheaper from booking it all though tourist information centre (about $100 off).
After feeling a little lighter (in the pocket) we decided to hit the local brewery to help us get over the shock. Whilst there we sampled all they had to offer and then some.
The only problem was this gave us the munchies, luckily the lady at the tourist information centre gave as details of Alexandrina Cheese Company, a 7 award winning cheese factory. I think the below photos say it all!.
After such a big lunch we needed to stretch our legs and visited the Goolwa Barrage* where we saw a seal catching some rays and heap of birds waiting for there next feed.
*One of five barrages that are on the Mouth of Murray to help control the flow of sea water in to the river.
Today (Sunday 12th Feb) we visited Victor Harbour and Granite Island. Normally there is a Horse drawn double decker tram that connects the two. However due to all the cheese we ate yesterday they wouldn’t let us on in fear of the extra weight. So we ended up walking across (actually they weren’t running due to work being done on the track). When on the island you got some fantastic views and would have been able to see whales passing had we been there at the right time of year.
