Most of the buildings along the main street of Robe are still the original buildings from the first European settler’s. One of which was a fantastic bakery which is still going today. They make some great cakes and fresh egg and bacon rolls
Amongst some of these buildings, although mostly residential, there sits a church which is know to be linked with Mary Mackillop (who is now a saint).
The Obelisk
Stands at 40 foot tall and roughly about 100 feet above the sea level . Built in 1855 by local builder George Shivas at a cost of 230 pounds. It can be seen form 20KM away at sea on a clear day.
I would like to say that we did more; but the call of the beach and lazing around the campsite was far to appealing – It’s a hard life!!!!
Today we headed off towards Kingston to get a picture of the big red lobster and the local lighthouse..
Before setting up our tent on Coorong National park for the night
Just a few feet from our campsite is a sand track that leads to the beach. After deflating our tyre's down to 17 PSI, selecting low range 4wd, we climbed the first sand dune, heading for the beach. Heart pounding and adrenaline pumping it was an awesome experience with a few hairy raising moments. i.e. feeling the car losing grip and start to slide sideways down the dune or fear of tipping over on the track as one side dips lower than the other.
We made it back to camp alive and with no damage. Not sure how we are going to cope with no electricity or running water though……..
