So we left Yambuk on Sunday morning in the hope of crossing the border into SA by the afternoon, whilst stopping in a few places along the way. Unfortunately we only got as far as Portland (about 60km from Yambuk) and decided to stop due to bad weather. It was bucketing it down with strong winds to boot. So we pitched up our tent on a campsite in the heart of Portland.
We did managed to visit on place just past Portland before retreating back to our tent. It was right on the coast line, about 4KM from town, where you could see “The Blowholes and Petrified forest”
Unfortunately because of the height of the tide we were not able to see the blowholes in full glory. However we did walk through the petrified forest. The tube like things you can see in this picture above were once trees. Some say they were smothered by a large sand dune, water seeped down through the sand to form a crust of sandstone on the outside of the trunks, decaying the trees, leaving what you can see in the picture. Others believe it was formed from natural erosion and just looks like fossilised tree trunks. Either way it was good to see but we couldn’t wait to get back to the warmth and dry of the car.
Back at camp and in typical James fashion, he discovered the spare wheel support on the trailer was a bit loose, and decided to see how much it would wiggled, until it wiggled straight of the trailer and onto the floor. The look on his face was priceless but the camera was to far away to get a picture in time. To make him feel better and to escape the wind and rain we decided to get a bottle of wine and have dinner in the camp kitchen while watching TV.
After a bad night sleep thanks to the continued bad weather and the worry that we would be blown away at any moment. We were packed up early in an effort to to find somewhere that could weld the spare wheel support back together, which we were able to do. Once again we set off for the border.
On the route we stopped off at Princess Margaret Rose caves in Lower Glenelg National Park, to stretch our legs and take a guided tour into the caves.
After this we stopped in at a little town that reminded us of home (by name only).
slight difference from the one back home……
Finally……… We are in SA and ended up finding a campsite for the next few nights in Robe. We will keep you posted on what we get up to here and what else James breaks in the meantime!
